40 years ago Dr. Crais reattached myleft hand by microsurgery. The injury wassustained on the job, as a ladder slidoff the side of a house I was preppingfor painting. The hand slammed througha window, severing everything excepta tiny piece of skin on the back of mywrist, which kept it on my body. As I extracted my hand from the window,blood started pumping out in gushers.My best friend saved my life byclamping the gushing arteries and veinsas he and the contractor took me to the nearest hospital. That hospital happenedto be 11 minutes away from the accident site. The ER doctor told me ' Well son, your friend saved your life, but you've lost your hand.' He put my hand in a bucketof ice, still hanging by the thin layer ofskin on the wrist. I was left alone for45 minutes in ER until the prep and surgicalteam was assembled. I kept thinking that if I fainted or fell asleep, I would die.And it just so happened that a doctornamed Thomas Crais,M.D.had recently relocated to New Orleans, La. from Columbia Physicians and Surgeonsin Manhattan, and he and his teamproceeded to expertly sew the hand, nerves, arteries, veins, and tendons back in what was a 12 hour surgery, involving severalsurgeons and an incredible team of 5nurses. When I woke up, my mother and my wife greeted me and told me whathad occurred. It was difficult to evencomprehend. The hospital over thenext year continued to give me physicaltherapy, even though my employer hadno workmans comp. In short, my life, my hand, and my future pursuing a J.D.in Law at Tulane University, were securedby this incredible physician and surgeon,Thomas Crais, M.D.
