Beware. Do ur homework. Listen to your gut. Get second opinion. Child still in pain after being released to play basketball after 4 weeks of surgery. Office staff is not the nicest. Multiple times asking & bringing him in for pain & worry. Just went to different Dr. Sure enough!!! We were correct. One year of pain for our child & angry at entire experience.

Went in for an 'overnight'. Suppose to be a quick surgery to wash out an infection site. Ended up being a couple weeks in the hospital and would have been longer had I not stood up against what was going on! First time I ever saw this guy, first thing out of his mouth was about cutting the bone and doing a revision on my amputation. This was the second operation and as soon as I came to afterwards, I knew what he had done! Oh, he had spoken about the possible need for a revision, but I was under the assumption that it would be a last resort and definitely further down the road. His excuse for doing the revision? He 'didn't like the way the last surgeon left it', no other reason. The infectious disease Doctor assumed there was an infection in the bone because he removed some. I got the two together and he admitted there was no infection, no reason than he didn't like the way it had been left.He butchered me! I am now worse off than I was before he did this to me. I have had more problems with phantom pain in the last 4 months than I've had in the previous 4 years! By this time after the amputation, I was walking with a cane. Now, I have to use a crutch and it's not looking good as far as getting rid of it any time soon as it is uncomfortable as all get out to attempt to walk without it. The leg is not stable in the socket for one thing, like he may have cut it off too short. As I said, he butchered me and did me NO FAVORS what so ever! He violated my trust by doing what he did. I almost get the feeling that he had never done a revision before and this was his shot at doing one. He left the site in very poor shape, with a tag of skin on one side that sticks up and on the other side when the prosthesis comes off, there are creases that relax after it's been off for a while, but are areas that I will gave to watch for possible infection problems! Not happy at all with this!No problems with the staff and the treatment I got before and after the surgery, just not at all happy with Dr Eric Potthoff!

I have had multiple surgeries with Mercy and the Surgical Center and have always felt like they were professionals and were very attentive to my comfort, informing me of what was to come and have never had a negative result whether it be with the surgery itself or just interacting with the staff.

I went in to Mason City Clinic nearly a year and a half ago to see Dr. Potthoff regarding very severe pain and weakness in my right knee. He did what i felt was a very quick examination and then suggested physical therapy and a cortisone shot. no xray ordered, no MRI ordered. I accepted the cortisone shot and hoped for the best. I returned to see Dr. Potthoff about a month ago, as the cortisone shot had worn off and i was again in extreme pain and having serious mobility issues related to my knee. Again he quickly 'examined' my knee...if you can call it that...and ordered another cortisone shot and physical therapy. This time x-rays were done prior to him seeing me. I know however that x-rays don't show soft tissue damage so i asked him about an MRI...only to get pretty much blown off. He flat out told me that with as much pain as i was in...he wouldn't touch me with a knife anyway. REALLY? That second shot didn't work at all and i was back in the office a week later seeing a Physician's Assistant, who examined my knee much more thoroughly than Dr. Potthoff had, and immediately saw the need for an MRI. We discussed physical therapy again and i explained that i could barely move my knee as it was and i didn't want to injure it worse by pushing beyond where it wanted to go, and he completely understood. A few days later he called me back with the results of my MRI...arthritis throughout my knee, a Baker's Cyst that had ruptured very recently, and a medial meniscus tear. He told me i needed to come back in and see a surgeon...i said how about anyone OTHER THAN Dr. Potthoff since he obviously doesn't want to be bothered with helping me to begin with...based on what he had said the last time i saw him. I'm extremely unhappy with all of this. I can't help wondering if he had scheduled me for an MRI at our initial visit over a year ago...would i be having the problem with this recently ruptured Baker's Cyst at all?
